Our board members

Grant A. Barbour, President:

Grant is a 1984 graduate of the UC Davis Law School and received an MBA from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Business. Grant has worked as real estate and environmental attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last two decades. Grant also has extensive experience working with land trusts and other environmental non-profits in western states, including the American Land Conservancy and others.


 

David Z. Nevin, Vice President:

David Nevin is a partner in the Boise law firm of Nevin, Benjamin & McKay LLP, where he has practiced in the areas of criminal defense, personal injury and environmental law since 1983. After graduating from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1978, David served as an instructor at the University of Toledo College of Law, and clerked for the Hon. Joseph J. McFadden of the Idaho Supreme Court. He is a founder and past president of the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, an Adjunct Professor of Trial Practice at the University of Idaho College of Law, and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Among his notable cases, David teamed with Gerry Spence and Laird Lucas to stop a proposed $ 1.2 billion nuclear waste incinerator in eastern Idaho in 2000.

Rick Johnson:

For nearly two decades, Rick Johnson has been Executive Director of the Idaho Conservation League, which works to protect and restore the air, water, wildlands, and wildlife of Idaho through citizen action, public education, and professional advocacy. Rick has helped grow the size, impact, and credibility of ICL; is a national leader in conservation strategy and organizational development; and serves on several boards. From 1987 – 1995 he worked for the Sierra Club on a variety of issues including the spotted owl/ancient forest campaign, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and several federal electoral campaigns. Rick has worked to protect the wilderness of Idaho for over 25 years.

Pam Marcum:

Pam graduated from the University of Idaho with a B.S. in Bacteriology, and specializes in forensic science. She spent much of her career with the Idaho State Police, and now is an independent forensic science consultant. She is also a past president of the Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists and was voted to life member status for her contributions to forensic science. Public lands grazing is one of Pam’s areas of expertise; and she has been active in defending the desert, including through prior board leadership on the Committee for Idaho’s High Desert. Pam also served for two years on the BLM’s Resource Advisory Council in Boise overseeing the Owyhee Canyonlands.

Paul Hilding:

Paul is an attorney specializing in insurance bad faith litigation, representing policy holders exclusively. He is a 1983 graduate of Duke Law School, and received his undergraduate degree at Ohio Wesleyan in 1980 (magna cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa). Paul has been practicing law in San Diego for over 25 years, and founded his own law firm there in 1993. Paul recently relocated with his wife to Boise, where he is devoting part of his time to environmental matters.

Eric Younger:

Eric received his BA from Occidental College in 1988; and earned a Masters in International Management from Thunderbird School of Management in 1997, after working in private business and serving in the Peace Corps.  For the past 15 years, Eric has held leadership positions with non-profit organizations to further issues of sustainable development.  Most recently, Eric was the Executive Director of the Foundation for Sustainable Development in San Francisco.  He has worked with over 250 national and international grassroots non-profits to further their efficacy by providing technical training, grants and interns.

Laird J. Lucas, Secretary and Executive Director:

Laird is a 1986 Yale Law School graduate who has been a public interest environmental lawyer since 1993. He is founder and Executive Director of Advocates for the West.
