Great Gray Owl

The Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is distributed across the Northern Hemishere, the southernmost population being a very small group in the Sierra Nevadas.  They live in abandoned raptor nests high in dead and broken trees or, to a lesser degree, in man-made structures designed for them.  Great Gray Owls are permanent residents and only move when food is scarce.

The biggest threat to their survival is habitat destruction through clearcutting and livestock grazing which reduces numbers of prey for them to eat.
