Slickspot peppergrass (Lepidium papilliferum) is a rare desert flower found only in portions of the Snake River plain, Owyhee Plateau, and adjacent foothills in southwestern Idaho. A member of the mustard family, it reaches 4-16 inches in height and is found at elevations between 2200 and 5300 feet.
This plant grows only in "slickspots" -- flat areas of 1 to 10 square meters that have high clay content in the soil, in which water forms shallow pools during rainy periods. When those pools dry up, the "slickspots" remain.
Slickspot peppergrass populations are now reduced to about 50 known "occurences." Trampling by livestock, and destruction by military training craft and off-road vehicles, are primary causes of the decline in the species in recent decades.
